Next Step Initiative (NSI), through the support of its strategic Heritage Partners, has created “The Heritage Leader Traineeship Programme” to support organisational and workforce development intended to address barriers to cultural change within the Scottish heritage sector thereby contributing to the wider decolonisation movement and to train people from BME communities in Scotland to be agents of change within the heritage sector.

14-Months Museum Placement
- Immerse yourself in the museum field through a hands-on placement at a leading institution. Gain practical experience in various museum operations and functions.
- Earn an SVQ3 Museums & Galleries Practice Qualification Achieve a recognized qualification that demonstrates your knowledge and skills in museum practice, enhancing your employability.
Develop Your Leadership Potential
- Pursue a dedicated leadership qualification to hone your supervisory and team management skills, preparing you for future career advancement.
Benefit from a Bespoke Training Programme
- Expand your knowledge and expertise through a tailored training programme, including courses offered by the Museums Association and the CEC Learning Hub, covering essential museum topics.
Receive a Competitive Tax-Free Bursary
- Receive a competitive tax-free bursary of £19,838 with the potential for an increase based on Museums Association guidelines, to support your living expenses during the programme.
Our Target Candidates
This traineeship programme is designed for individuals currently residing in Scotland who identify as:
Graduates of colleges and universities: We welcome applications from recent graduates in all disciplines who are eager to launch their careers.
Members of African and Caribbean communities: We are committed to supporting and fostering talent within these communities.
Members of other Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities: This programme is open to all BME communities across Scotland, valuing the diverse perspectives and experiences each individual brings.
About The Project
The project offers a range of training, development and volunteering activities, enabling people for BME communities to enter the heritage sector workforce, volunteer at the Board level in heritage organisations, and engage with museums and the built heritage as public members. It also supports organisations in the heritage sector to dismantle barriers and increase access.
- This will be done through: Providing paid traineeships in host organisations
- Offering EDI training for boards and staff in heritage organisations throughout Scotland
- Organising community engagement activities to raise awareness of opportunities to engage with, benefit from and influence change in the presentation of heritage in Scotland
- Run a Senior Leadership Volunteer Programme to build up a body of volunteers willing to work at senior level in heritage in Scotland
- Match decolonisation volunteers to host organisations
